Review: L.O.L. Surprise! Tots Unicorn and Fairies, worth £19.98

Review by VIP Club Member Laura Kebble

What can excite a little girl more than fairies and unicorns? My daughter was certainly excited to try the L.O.L Surprise! Unicorn and Fairies Tots.

They come in an enticing pink ball and opening them was genuinely exciting, each one came with several individually wrapped components, which added to the anticipation as each part was revealed. The Fairies come with a doll, fairy wings, a crystal kit and accessories whilst the Unicorns include the doll, unicorn accessories and hair.

One standout feature was the magical element. My daughter absolutely loved pouring glitter granules and water in the fairy wings to reveal a magical effect and adding liquid to the unicorn’s body to create a colourful lava lamp effect was a big hit. It’s imaginative and hands-on and perfect for creative little ones. Adult supervision is definitely required for littler hands as it was a bit fiddly to assemble all parts.

After the initial excitement of the creative element interest did taper. My daughter did enjoy role playing with the characters, particularly taking the fairy’s crown on and off but her attention certainly wasn’t held for long and she re-visited them infrequently. The dolls can’t stand up by themselves and so rely on their ball stands to stay upright which does limit imaginative play.

There are a number of both Unicorns and Fairies to discover so if your little one enjoys collecting sets of toys this could be a perfect fit. The surprise element of which one you are going to unwrap adds a layer of ongoing excitement and the hair of the Unicorns and wings of the Fairies are interchangeable adding some variety as you can mix and match. However, the cynical mum in me would argue that the surprise element can be costly at approximately £10 each if your child is insistent on collecting the set you can’t guarantee which one you are going to unwrap.

As a sceptical mum, I do have concerns about the amount of plastic involved too, especially considering the limited longevity in terms of play value. While they do spark short-term excitement, they may not hold attention in the long-term.
