What Are The Best Pets for Families With Kids?

Choosing a pet for your family isn’t always as simple as going with what your child wants. You’ll almost always end up doing the bulk of the care, so it’s worth picking something you’re happy to look after too.

A good family pet is gentle, manageable, and fits into your lifestyle without adding too much stress. Here are some of the best pet options to consider.

The Common: Cats (or Dogs)

Cats tend to be a favourite for a reason. Several parents mentioned how adult cats, in particular, are brilliant with kids. They’re usually very affectionate, fairly low maintenance, and are a great companionship without the chaos that often comes with puppies or kittens.

You can choose to adopt an older cat from a shelter, and many are already well-socialised and calm. Or, consider getting a kitten; just be prepared for extra energy, scratching, and a bit more work in those early months.

Breeds like Ragdolls or British Shorthairs are famously good-natured, but many family-friendly cats can be found in local shelters.

Dogs can be just as wonderful, especially if your kids are keen on an interactive pet. But they do come with A LOT more work. If you get a dog you need to be committed to training, walks, higher food bills, and vet visits.

If you’re on the fence, remember that a dog isn’t a part-time project. That said, breeds like Cavaliers, Labradors, or Cockapoos can be great with kids and manageable for first-time dog owners who are ready to commit.

The Socialable: Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs came up a lot in discussions about family pets. They’re sweet, vocal, and love being around people and each other. You’ll need at least two (they’re social animals), and they do need space to roam and regular care, but they’re often easier to handle than smaller rodents.

Just be ready for a bit of squeaking, they’re not exactly silent roommates.

The Calm: Fishkeeping

Fish can be a great way to introduce kids to animal care, but only if you’re aware of what’s involved. It’s not just “feed once a day and forget.” Regular water changes, proper tank cycling, and checking on filtration are essential.

Still, fish tanks can be genuinely calming and engaging for the whole family. Starter-friendly species include bettas, neon tetras, and guppies.

If you do go this route, remember you’ll need to change the aquarium water filter regularly. Shops like Finerfilters offer cheaper alternatives to branded filters, which can save a bit in the long run without any compromise on water quality.

The Unusual: Rats

Rats get a surprising amount of love from parents and pet lovers. They’re definitely not for everyone… but a lot of people said they’re smart, affectionate, and actually like being handled, mostly the males though.

You’ll need to keep at least two rats together for companionship, and they do need a decent-sized cage with enrichment, but they’re easy to bond with and can even learn tricks.

If you’re open-minded about the idea, they might be one of the most rewarding small pets out there. Just be mindful that they only live for around two to three years, which some kids might find tough.

Deciding On A Pet

The honest truth is that no pet is completely low maintenance. Even the most hands off animals still require proper care, research, and emotional commitment.

If you’re expecting your child to take on everything, it’s best to adjust that expectation now, but if you’re looking for a pet the whole family can enjoy and help care for together, there are definitely great options.

Take your time. Speak to a local rescue, talk to a vet, and don’t be afraid to ask other families what’s worked for them.
